Cover imageThis research presents the employment of oedometric compression test to be able to measure the break down of a safety layer acting as a diffusion barrier (“barrier effect”) occurring during cone calorimeter tests for ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer/aluminium trihydroxide (EVA/ATH) composites. The formation of an alumina level within sample surface during burning insulates thermally the root product and decreases the heat release price. The effectiveness of the buffer is determined by the cohesion of layer formed. This cohesion relies on the power of the particles (ATH and synergistic mineral fillers) to self-arrange. Throughout the test, the breakdown of this barrier can lead to an increase in HRR.

The oedometric compression test permits assessing the power of fillers to make a cohesive level. Results obtained from compression modulus of filler powders are directly associated with some areas of heat launch rate curve of composites assessed in cone calorimeter tests. Certainly, the look and also the power for the 2nd pHRR (associated with the breakdown of the barrier layer) in cone calorimeter test are related to the pitch of oedometric compression curve.
